Lab Scale Corrosion Test Rig

At ICER, Indian Institute of Science, we have designed and manufactured low capacity (10kW) lab-scale, table-top thermal storage loop. This loop can be used to perform experiments at high temperatures of up to 350oC. This setup is equipped with numerous temperature and pressure sensors at critical locations which will facilitate precise motoring of operating parameters.

The test section (TES) is optically accessible on three sides to permit sophisticated imaging techniques like PIV, LIF, IR imaging etc. Entire setup operations can be controlled using electrically wired control panel and NI LabView graphical interface which assure quick action and user-friendly data logging.

Aims of this project (experimental setup) are

  • To enable study of temperature and density stratified interface with quick turnaround time and maximum accuracy and repeatability.

  • To test thermocline stability for short and long durations with and without cyclic operations

  • To study vortex interactions with density and thermal stratification using modern imaging techniques

  • To enable corrosion studies on different salt samples.
